Whenever you visit a website, your computer and the web server (on which the website is hosted) communicate using a protocol that is known as https. While apparently, there are no issues using https protocol but it has some fundamental weaknesses that need to be addressed.
What do https & https mean?
https stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol while https stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure. As the name suggests, using https for websites is more secured. Using https, the computer and the web server agrees on ‘code’ between them. This code scrambles the information shared so that it cannot be read by any third party.
You can easily see if the website is using https or not by looking at the URL bar at the top your browser window. A connection that is using https will be showing an indication in form of a symbol such as key or a padlock. ‘Secure’ is also written on the left side of the URL to tell you if the connection is secured or not.
Intelicle Tells Importance of Upgrading to https
Intelicle will tell you why upgrading to https is important. We will tell you https is not safe and what are its weaknesses along with the advantages of using https.
Interception of Information
Probably the biggest weakness with https is that it can be intercepted. Information that is being exchanged between the website and your computer is not encrypted with https. Hence, it is more than a possibility that potential hackers are able to intercept and read the information being shared.
Verification of https is not Possible
Another weakness of https is that it can’t be verified. This means that there is no way that your computer is able to verify the identity of a website when using https. This gives an opportunity to hackers to imitate and impersonate the website you are visiting. This can result in attempt to steal your personal information or delivering malicious content to you.
This won’t be such a big problem if you are visiting a site for informational purposes. However, if you are visiting online shopping or banking sites, then clearly it is an issue. This problem can be solved easily if a secure communication channel is used. If https is used over Transport Layer Security (TLS), then what you get is https.
https Can Be Faster than https
The new and modern technologies used in designing the websites make them faster. But all such technologies work with sites which are on https.
Better Google Ranking
Google uses https as a ranking signal. So, if you want your website to rank higher in search rankings, you should prefer https over https.
Higher User Confidence
Using https can really give a confidence boost to your website users. Especially, if your site requires logging in or you are running an online store, you would want your users to feel assured about the personal information they share.
Using https will show that you care about privacy of your users and hence, they would have higher confidence when visiting your website.
Intelicle Recommends the Use of https Connection
Well, even if your website is not handling sensitive information, you should still go for https connection for the very reasons mentioned above.
Intelicle would recommend that all new websites should use https. If your website is already built, we can help convert it and get you signed security certificates.
